Wedding of Kannaki and Kovalan |
On a certain day Kovalan, passing through his native city of Puhar, was fascinated by the charms of the accomplished courtesan of the day, Madavi. On her, he lavished all his wealth and fortune.
With the passage of time, he developed a clandestine love-affair with Madhavi alias Vayanthi of Puhur. As the most handsome dancing girl of the temple and her charming looks fascinated Kovalan so much that he soon forgot Kannaki and deserted her.
Madhavi loved luxury and to satisfy her Kovalan spent lavishly on her. He became destitute and reduced to penury so much that he began to borrow money to balance his budget.
After a few years of life with Madavi, wisdom dawned on Kovalan. One day, unable to bear the situation any more, and in a rage, he blatantly upbraided Madhavi, left her and went in search of Kannaki.
Impoverished, he returned to his wife, who received him with open arms, as her dear lord and husband. When she saw him coming at a distance, she went to meet him and welcomed him without any anger or ill-will.
